Frequently asked questions about Educational Memory Game
What is this educational memory game and how does it work?
It is an online educational memory game: a version of the classic concentration game (also known as a matching game or pairs game) adapted for the classroom. Instead of matching identical images, the cards show pairs of concept and definition. The board starts with all cards face down. When you flip two, the game checks whether the concept and definition match: if yes, they stay revealed in green; if not, they flip back. The goal is to find all pairs with the fewest number of moves possible.
What board sizes are available? Which is most recommended for class?
Three sizes: Easy (6 pairs, 3×4 board with 12 cards), Normal (8 pairs, 4×4 board with 16 cards) and Hard (10 pairs, 4×5 board with 20 cards). For projecting in class with the whole group participating, Normal is the most balanced: enough challenge to hold attention without the game running too long. For elementary school or for the first time playing, Easy is ideal.
What pair banks are included?
9 banks with 12 pairs each: Natural Sciences (photosynthesis, cell, ecosystem...), History and Geography (democracy, revolution, colonization...), Mathematics (triangle, equation, geometry...), Language and Literature (noun, metaphor, synonym...), Human Body (heart, brain, neurons...), Art and Music (melody, perspective, harmony...), Technology (algorithm, programming, processor...), Animals (mammal, metamorphosis, hibernation...) and General Culture (philosophy, biodiversity, empathy...). In each game the pairs needed for the chosen board size are selected at random.
Can I load my own pairs?
Yes. Choose the 'My pairs' option and load your own bank of concepts and definitions for any subject, unit or level. Use the 'Concept' field for the term or question, and 'Definition' for the answer or explanation. You need to enter at least as many pairs as the chosen board size: 6 for Easy, 8 for Normal or 10 for Hard.
What do moves, time and accuracy measure?
Every time you flip two cards (whether they match or not) it counts as one move. Time measures how many minutes and seconds it took from start to finding the last pair. Accuracy is calculated by comparing the number of pairs with the number of moves: if you find 8 pairs in exactly 8 moves, accuracy is 100%. This metric encourages paying attention to cards already seen rather than flipping at random.
Is the educational memory game free? Do I need to sign up?
Yes, it is completely free and requires no sign-up or download. Open the link and start playing in seconds from any device: computer, tablet or smartphone. It works offline once the page is loaded.
How do you use the memory game in class with the whole class?
Project the board on the screen and play in full-class mode. An effective dynamic is to divide the class into teams: each team's turn they choose two cards. If they find the pair they score a point; if not, the next team goes. Another variant is for the teacher to flip cards according to suggestions called out by the group. Since the cards have text readable from the projection, the whole class can participate even if only one person operates the device.
For which educational level is it appropriate?
It adapts to any level. With the pre-designed banks it works well from 4th grade elementary through adults. For lower levels, Easy board (6 pairs) and short definitions are ideal. For secondary school, Hard board with History, Science or Technology banks creates a more challenging experience. With custom pairs you can adjust vocabulary difficulty to any level and subject.
When in the lesson is it best to use it?
The educational memory game works very well at three moments: at the start of class to activate prior knowledge from the unit being worked on, during the closing to consolidate key concepts, or as review before an exam. It is also useful as a transition activity between topics: 10 minutes of memory helps the group shift mental registers in a playful way without losing educational focus.
What pedagogies support using the memory game in class?
The educational memory game falls within Game-Based Learning and Purposeful Gamification: it uses the classic mechanics of memory games to work technical vocabulary with intrinsic motivation. It also aligns with Formative Assessment: cards that are flipped incorrectly most often reveal to the teacher which concepts the group has not yet mastered.
What competencies does it develop?
Beyond subject vocabulary, it works sustained attention and concentration (you need to remember what card is where), Metacognition (students evaluate what they know and what they confuse), Frustration tolerance when a pair doesn't match, and in the group version, Collaboration to agree on which card to choose.
How is this memory game different from other educational games on the site?
Each game on the site works vocabulary differently. Educational Hangman and Educational Wordle challenge spelling letter by letter. Word Chain associates terms with their initial letter. This memory game works the direct semantic relationship between concept and definition: it is an active memorization exercise where students recognize and associate rather than only recall spelling, which activates a deeper understanding of meaning. It is especially effective for technical vocabulary where the precise definition matters.
