Frequently asked questions about Guess the Character

How do you play Guess the Character?

One player is the guesser: they look away while the rest of the group sees the word on screen. When they turn back, they ask questions that the group answers with Yes or No (Am I a real person? Am I alive today? Am I a woman? Am I from Latin America?). The teacher presses Got it! when the player gives the correct answer, or Didn't get it if time runs out or they decide to pass. Each correct answer scores points. When all turns are done, the scoreboard and podium are shown.

What character and word banks are included?

13 banks with 390+ cards: Classical antiquity (Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Socrates, Alexander the Great...), Medieval and Renaissance (Joan of Arc, da Vinci, Charlemagne, Cervantes...), Latin America (Simón Bolívar, Sor Juana, Frida Kahlo, Che Guevara...), Scientists and inventors (Einstein, Marie Curie, Darwin, Nikola Tesla, Ada Lovelace...), 20th century world (Gandhi, Churchill, Mandela, Eva Perón...), Artists and writers (Borges, García Márquez, Shakespeare, Picasso, Neruda...), Musicians (Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Shakira...), Athletes (Maradona, Federer, Pelé, Serena Williams...), Fictional characters (Harry Potter, Don Quixote, Sherlock Holmes, Katniss Everdeen...), Mythology (Zeus, Odysseus, Ra, Quetzalcóatl...), Animals (platypus, axolotl, praying mantis...), School concepts (democracy, photosynthesis, evolution, capitalism...) and Objects and places (Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu, Great Wall, Colosseum...).

Can I load my own characters or words?

Yes. In the Custom words section, write one per line: the characters or concepts coming up on the next exam, the literary characters from the book they are reading, scientific terms from the current unit, or any curricular content. You can mix custom words with predefined banks and activate only the relevant banks for the class.

What are the hints and how do they work?

Each card in the bank has up to 5 hints ordered from most vague to most direct. The teacher can reveal them one by one by clicking Reveal hint when the guesser is stuck. The first hint gives general context (era, field or region); the fifth is almost a direct description. If you activate Penalize hints in settings, each hint used deducts 1 point from the score for that turn, encouraging guessing without help.

Does the game have a timer?

Yes. You can set an optional timer: 30 seconds, 1 minute, 1 min 30 sec, 2 or 3 minutes. It runs while the player asks questions. In the last 10 seconds the counter flashes red to add tension. When time runs out the turn automatically advances as Didn't get it. Without a timer the teacher decides when to end each turn manually.

How do you use it in class with many students?

The most common way is to project the tool on the classroom screen. One student goes to the front or turns their chair, the teacher shows the word to the rest of the class, and the student starts asking questions to the group. The whole class participates by answering Yes or No aloud. You can give each student a turn for each card and cover 10 or more characters in 20 minutes.

How do you use Guess the Character to review curriculum content?

The most effective way is to load your own words with the characters, concepts or events from the topic being studied. The Yes/No questions the guesser asks (Did they live before Christ? Is it a biological process? Did it happen in Latin America?) activate exactly the type of analysis you want students to do. The teacher can observe what questions each student asks as a direct indicator of topic comprehension — a covert formative assessment.

For which educational level is it appropriate?

For upper elementary and all secondary levels. The Animals and Fictional characters banks are ideal from fourth grade. The Historical figures, Scientists and inventors, and School concepts banks are perfect for reviewing in secondary school. The Mythology, Art and Musicians banks have more depth for high school. With custom words it adapts to any subject and level, including higher education and teacher training.

How is it different from Educational Taboo and Charades?

In Guess the Character, the guesser asks Yes/No questions to the group to discover what or who they are. In Educational Taboo the player describes the word without saying the forbidden ones. In Charades they act without speaking. All three develop different skills: Guess the Character works logical reasoning and inference; Taboo works vocabulary and precise description; Charades works body language and non-verbal communication.

What competencies does it develop?

Guess the Character develops Logical reasoning (formulating questions that efficiently rule out options), Critical thinking (analyzing the essential characteristics of characters and concepts), Oral expression, Metacognition (knowing what you know and don't know about a topic) and Decision-making under pressure when the timer is active.

What pedagogies support this game?

It falls within Game-Based Learning, Formative Assessment (the teacher observes what students know through the questions they ask) and Guided Inquiry: the player builds a hypothesis from partial answers and refines it with each question, replicating the process of inductive reasoning.

Can I save and share the configuration with colleagues?

Yes. The Export button downloads a JSON file with all parameters: players, active banks, custom words, timer and hint penalties. The Load button restores that configuration on any device. The Share button generates a link with the full configuration encoded: ideal for setting up the game at home and opening it ready to go on the classroom projector, or sending it to another teacher working on the same topic.
